Dell Latitude D430 OSx86 working install guide using iPC PPF5 Final

I had an iMac for a while now and have been thinking of getting a Macbook aswell.

Just recently I’ve been given a Dell D430 I’ve heard a lot about OSx86 and tried to do it once before with a kalyway install but failed miserably. This Dell D430 has a good spec match to the macbooks and seems to be supported a bit so thought i’d give it a whirl.

It took about 6 hours, 2 of them spent downloading the 4.3gb iPC DVD from Rapidshare (btw, jDownloader + Rapidshare premium ftw)

I burnt the ISO to a Blank 4.7 DVD, popped it into my Lenovo USB DVD Combo drive (No DVD/CD on the D430)
to my amazement the OSX installer booted up straight away.

Note: You’ll need a USB KB + Mouse for the first boot, the installer works with the D430′s kb + trackpad but after install it needs little more work.

Install done using iPC OSX 10.5.6 PPF5 Universal Final – Base
Use the following options when installing:

- Kernel: Voodoo 9.5.0
- Video: Intel GMA950
- Chipset: LegacyAppleIntelPIIXATA
- Audio: Sigmatel 9200 (Might not work, if not fix later with Apple HDA Patcher instructions below)
- Ethernet: Intel 82566MM/DC (Not tested, I use Wifi)
- Wireless: Intel PROSet/Wireless 3945
- USB: Patched USB + PCGenUSBEHCI
- Fixes & Patches: ACPI Fix
Time Machine Patch
IOPCIFamily.kext patched
Seatbelt.kext 10.5.5
USB Mount Fix
PS/2 Device Support (Both KB + Mouse)
DSDT Patch
- All Applications

Restart remember to use “-f” flag when starting up for the first time.

KEYBOARD AND MOUSE Install

1. Download Package PS2Fix1054.
2. Right Click on the Package -> Open With -> Pacifist
3. After 15 Seconds, Click on Not Yet (Support Charles if you use this App)
4. Expand contents of “Choice0″
5. Expand contents of “appleps2controller.pkg”
6. Right Click “ApplePS2Controller.kext” and select the option “Install to default location”

To solve the kernel panics when mounting dmg’s
Install this seatbelt.kext from 10.5.5 over the one from 10.5.6, use osx86tools for install
Remember to fix permissions.

Audio Fix:
Download Apple HDA Patcher 1.20
and the correctly patch file for the Sigmatel 9200 audio

Battery Monitor: (Source: http://mydellmini.com/forum/mac-os-x/871-battery-monitor.html)

You’ll need the following Kext collection,
Kexts for battery monitor
We only need PowerManagement.bundle + AppleACPIBatteryManager.kext

First is PowerManagement.bundle, that goes into to /System/Library/SystemConfiguration folder
Then there’s AppleACPIBatteryManager.kext, that goes into the /System/Libary/Extensions directory. Fix the extension permissions with osx86tools, reboot with -f

Summary

There is only 1 thing I cannot get working (Which I’m still working on finding a fix) the SD Card reader, it seems to freeze the laptop when a card is inserted.

If everything goes smoothly you should have OSX up and running on your Dell within an hour.
Winner Winner!

Thanks for reading & good luck
Rob

Thanks to Insanely Mac for being an invaluable resource for me :)

thanks for the guide, i got a d430 but i cannot get the Mouse to work at all. ( i mean the touch pad ) and could you explain how to fix the audio? i have downloaded the HD kext file but how do i use the Patch file for sigmatel its a .txt extension.

ALso. i cannot see the wireless anywhere :(

    kind regards

    Hey, glad it was useful.
To fix the audio, just drag the txt file over the HDA Patcher application, it will then do some magic, reboot with -f and it should be working perfectly.
I’m not sure what to suggest about the touch pad, apply the ps2 fix was all that was needed for me. try re-applying it or maybe get the dell post installer util and try the fixes from that. make sure you fix permission with osx86tools and reboot with -f for the first time.

I think the wireless hardware might differ slightly between different D430 laptops, the wireless is a broadcom chip usually, I chose the intel pro/wireless driver but other users have reported it working out the box with no additional drivers, i personally didn’t try that.

    Thanks for your reply rob.

one more thing. I read everywhere people saying reboot with -f. how do i do that ? sorry for my noobness in advance.

do i need to fire a command from the terminal after installing ? as in restart -f or something. or is taht during when i boot up the laptop i type -f ?

    Thanks in advance

  4. Rob says:

Your welcome, don’t apologise :) its possible that your laptop is hiding the boot options, if so you might need to hop into the bios and disable quick boot or similar option.
What happens for me is you get the Dell screen then it should flick onto the Darwin boot screen something like the following:
    http://is.gd/15Bi7

It should ask you to press any key (or maybe a specific key like F8) to enter options (you usually get only a few seconds)… do so then type -f into the prompt and press enter
it forces osx to load all the kext’s usually they are cached.

So how is the laptop in actual use? Any particular problems worth noting?

Someone has offered my a Latitude D430 and after seeing this post I’m tempted.

    Hi,

I’ve installed mac os on a D430 using this guide but I’ve also installed windows 7 on it. I installed windows 7 first but mac os won’t boot at all. I don’t get a bootloader, the PC goes straight in to windows. How can I get it to boot mac os ? I was surprised not to have to choose a bootloader from the mac os customization settings you provided here.

    Regards,
    John

  7. John says:

I’ve installed bcdedit and can now access the macos bootloader but the laptop doesn’t complete the boot sequence it stops at “still waiting for boot device”.

  8. John says:

I’ve reformated the laptop and reinstalled mac os alone but I’m still getting the “still waiting for root device” message.

  9. Rob says:

Hi John, sorry to hear your having trouble, unfortunately I have no experience of this error.
I’m presuming you have installed the OSX onto partition 0 internal disk of the D430? and is the disk is master?

The only thing i can really suggest is popping over to osx86 and asking on the forum, there should be loads of things to go at.

  10. Fred says:

    Hi,

I am tring to install OSX86 on my D430 with the install source you mention upper. unfortunately I have a black screen just after the apple.
Did you use a docking station with a screen plugged with DVI ?

  11. Rob says:

Hey Fred, no I did not.

I’d suggest installing exactly as my guide describes as I know this works perfectly for my D430 manufactured in 2007

Also try burning the disk slower than its rated maximum, I have problems with a couple of DVD’s that I burnt at their maximum rated speed.

  12. Fred says:

    Thanks Rob,

It works now. but unfortunately I have no wifi and my ethernet is disconnected even with the cable plugged.
    Any suggestions?

  15. Matthew says:

    Dear Rob,
How can I boot up without -f?
    Cheers,
    Matt

  16. Matthew says:

    Hi Rob,
I actually missed the first boot so it went straight into the system without problem. However, I cannot use the -f anymore. It freezes if I apply. What are the implications?
Thank you. Your guide is so clear even for a newbee like me.
    Cheers,
    Matt

Can someone please help :-( .
i installed it with the above config and many other ways too, but it always gets a black screen after the apple logo, just like Rob.
After a while it starts playing a weird song like from the 90′s (still black) then stops and does nothing and again plays song(still black screen) ………
    Please help me.
    Thanks
    Regards,
    Brandon

Thanks Rob, for this excellent how-to how to get OSX loaded on my D430.
Right now it’s my 2nd install because I forgot the “-f” parameter and 1-2 other things, but I’m sure I will get OSX up and running this time :-)
